The Educator's Book of Secrets: 164 Truths of Masterful Teacher is an accumulation of thinking from nearly 40 years in American education.   After teaching teachers the last 23 years, Dr. Runyan redesigned his two graduate courses around the book to apply the key points.  The syllabi for these two Pittsburg State University graduate courses are downloadable below. 

TCHL 843:  Trends and Issues in American Education

The course explores the concept of school reform through an examination of the critical issues facing the American school and the promising trends found in restructuring the educational effort.  In surveying the critical issues, the current condition of the American educational system, the teaching profession, and the future of American education will be explored.    In examining promising trends, explored will be specific characteristics, programs, practices and techniques used in developing a restructured school that provides students with the skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to meet the demands of the 21st century.  Also examined will be Effective Schools research, Outcome-Based Education, and various other paradigms.  This course is designed to provide the knowledge base needed to empower teachers to change their schools.  Teachers and administrators interested in orienting their school towards meeting the educational demands of  the future will find it interesting and challenging.

TCHL 850:  Current Teaching Practices

Picture
This course explores the evolution and application of research on effective teaching in terms of methodologies and perspectives.  It will explore current classroom practices and how to transfer research in the area of teaching effectiveness into practice.
